Best: Magic Mike (2012) Mud was a close run second, but McConaughey's perfect portrait of slime-ball entrepreneur Dallas (ironically named, given this year's nomination) in the surprisingly brilliant strip-fest is his crowning glory. It's not only that the performance utterly gets under the skin - the same way as his cameo in Wolf Of Wall Street, and his enduringly exceptional work on True Detective - it's that McConaughey pulled the greatest trick of his entire resurgence on the audience. He took off his clothes AND managed to offer a stunningly effective acting performance. Seriously, who would have bet on that? Worst: Fool's Gold (2008) Clearly there are two McConaugheys: there's the guy who has become one of the hottest properties in Hollywood (and will continue with Interstellar later this year) and then there's the guy who was trapped in a loop of making dross like Fool's Gold. The film is no more than a thinly veiled opportunity to get the lead in as few clothes as possible, and the flimsy concept shows.
