13 Broken Comic Book Movie Franchises (And How To Fix Them)

5. Spawn

For all Todd McFarlane's enthusiasm that the Spawn sequel/reboot will eventually come to our screens, there has been very little to shout about since the original Spawn disappointed audiences (and melted a few eyeballs with archaic CGI) back in 1997. Lately things seem to have geared up a little, and ever since Jamie Foxx's announcement at Comic-Con that he was "aggressively pursuing" the lead role of the accursed Al Simmons, the Spawn reboot has been given a very big leg-up, at least in PR terms. This may finally see it enter production, but then there have been false dawns in the past, and it's probably fair to say that MacFarlane's well-publicised legal problems have likely hindered the film's development as much as any other factors. MacFarlane has stated several times that he intends for this version of Spawn to focus on the horror/supernatural elements of the story. This approach would act as a means of differentiating the property from the overcrowded superhero marketplace. This is definitely the route to go, and a Spawn adaptation more in line with the tone of the HBO animated series from the 90s, would go some way towards eradicating the memory of the failed 1997 effort.
