13 Broken Comic Book Movie Franchises (And How To Fix Them)

9. Blade

A simple answer to the Blade problem would be to allow Guillermo Del Toro to make Blade: Resurrection on his terms immediately. Actually it might be an idea to just give Del Toro a producing role, as the the Mexican auteur already has a pretty full slate: however the logistics are worked out, another Blade film that captures the energy and spirit of Del Toro's 2001 sequel would be an entirely welcome proposition, and the key to making the property work. The problem is that the franchise's leverage with audiences has been dealt consecutive blows by a lacklustre third entry in Blade: Trinity and an even more lacklustre TV adaptation. The time could be right to return to Blade though: Wesley Snipes is set to make his post-prison comeback later this year in The Expendables 3, and he would no doubt welcome a return to the role, as he has already intimated - presuming Marvel would want to use him. Like with Ghost Rider the rights to Blade reverted to Marvel in 2011, and from the information that has been released so far the indications seem to be that they have plans to reboot the character. Little has been heard about what they actually do intend to do though so it could even be possible that they bring Snipes in and introduce an older, even more gritty Blade into MCU continuity. This is unlikely but it would certainly be a fresh and radical approach, and it might well mean that the character is given the boost of proximity with success, particularly with the supernatural elements of the MCU coming in with Doctor Strange.
