Devastation Rating: 9/10 For emotional stakes in an opening sequence to a Disney film, Up definitely beats all others on the grand scale of absolute misery. You can watch it time and again, and you're sure to fall victim to a few tears every time. The worst thing is the fact that these two adorable childhood sweethearts who have built the cutest life together can't have children. And then it's all topped off by Ellie dying, and Carl being left alone. This is another scenario in movies where the plight of an old person wrenches at the hearts of the audience: how will Carl survive his old age without the woman he's loved his whole life? Anyone watching this with someone they've grown up and ended up falling in love with may well take it as prophecy that this is the terrible fate you and your S.O will suffer. It's not just sad, it's a threat as well.
I love Stephen King and music festivals; I eat my toast upside down; I daydream about getting married probably a bit too much; and I wish every day for a pet sausage dog puppy (who never materialises – sob).
