6. The Tribe
The Pitch: A Ukranian drama filmed entirely in sign language but without any subtitles to guide the viewer, The Tribe revolves around a boarding school for the deaf that gives way to shocking acts of violent crime.
The Buzz: Reviews have been largely positive even if there aren't too many of them, likely due to the niche, daring approach. Critics say that the lack of subtitles transcends any potential gimmick: without a deliberate meaning, audiences are drawn in even closer and forced to pay more attention to body language and other facets of human behaviour beyond mere speech. An audacious directorial debut from Miroslav Slaboshpitsky, it is nothing if not an excellent, unique calling card for the director.
Release Date: It's already out in Ukraine, other locations TBA.
