The Originals: Director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire made a formidable team in the web-slinger's first two cinematic outings, folding the hero's inherent goofiness into fun, heartfelt and action-packed superhero extravaganzas.

The Threequel: Few superheroes movies have ever been as wildly anticipated as Spider-Man 3, which saw Peter taking on not only the Sandman and Venom, but also James Franco's Green Goblin Mk. 2.

Ultimately, the movie had way too many villain plotlines to juggle, introduced a contrived ret-con regarding Uncle Ben's death, was full of cringe-worthy humour, botched Venom, and was so disheartening to fans that it led to a full-on 2012 reboot that basically remade the original 2002 movie. Boo.
