Surprisingly enough, critics mostly agreed that the Coen brothers' latest was on-par with their recently acclaimed efforts, even though it's a fundamentally uneven movie that struggles to find a consistent rhythm.

The performances are mostly splendid, yes, and it looks gorgeous, but as is true of so many anthology films, the quality of the writing is all over the place between shorts, and the pacing verges on brutal at times.

The result is the Coens' least-inspired effort since 2004's The Ladykillers, and though it's not without its charms, you might find yourself wishing you liked it a whole lot more than you did.
