7. Ego Is A REALLY Bad Guy - Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

When it was announced that Kurt Russell would be playing a version of Ego The Living Planet ahead of the release of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2, it wasn't too much of a leap to imagine that he was going to be revealed as a villain. Or at the very least a megalomaniac. But then, that assumed the audience was aware of Ego's various arcs in the comics, which would be something of an assumption, given that he's a relatively obscure character.

So it was still a fairly big deal when it turned out that Ego wasn't looking for Peter Quill because of some irresistible paternal urge, but because he wanted to use him as a battery to boost his own power and conquer the universe. The subsequent revelations that he'd sired (and killed) multiple other alien children along the way added further spice, but it was his confession of the murder of Meredith Quill that really struck the final blow.

With Peter (and the audience) fed a story of great inter-galactic romance, the idea that Ego would implant his love with cancer to stop her being a distraction was almost unbearable and took him beyond the traditional level of unhinged mad scientist evil.
