6. That's Not Wolverine - Logan

Logan might well be heralded as one of the greatest R-rated movies of all time, but it works for the most part because of some pretty standard story pillars and good old-fashioned authentic emotional plotting.

The most devastating, extreme moment comes away from the gore and the swearing and the high-octane action: it comes as the culmination of a heart-warming scene of normalcy. In an island of calm, Logan, Laura and Xavier pretend to be a normal family to stay with the Munsons, and at the end of what he calls the perfect day, Xavier heart-breakingly reveals to Logan the truth of the death of the X-Men. Away from turmoil he found peace and a tiny amount of happiness.

But then the twist comes with a devastating bang: it's not Logan he was relating his sad story to - it's X24, the animalistic Wolverine clone who rewards his sharing by putting his claws through his heart. It's enough to genuinely suck all of the air out of you.
