13 Movies That Contradict Their Own Message

The Intended Message: Unplanned pregnancy isn't the end of your life.

The Real Message: Unplanned pregnancy is no big deal.

On the face of it, this Oscar-winning drama about the titular teenager's (Ellen Page) unplanned pregnancy is a life-affirming film which assures youngsters that such an unexpected event doesn't mean your life is over.

Unfortunately Diablo Cody's script ultimately tips the balance a little too far in the direction of "getting randomly knocked up as a teenager is no biggie at all!", because we see little of the physical or emotional strain that pregnancy causes a person - especially a 16-year-old - and by film's end the status quo is restored just a little too easily.

The film as a whole is just too hip and breezy about an event that can stick with young people into adulthood and colour the trajectory of their entire lives. Here pregnancy seems like little more than a mild quibble that's forgotten as soon as the end credits roll. Not exactly the most responsible message for youngsters, then.
