13 Movies That Contradict Their Own Message
5. Revenge Of The Nerds
The Intended Message: Nerds are sweet and misunderstood.
The Real Message: Nerds are rapists.
The Revenge of the Nerds franchise is, on the face of it, a series of movies focused on the escapades of a group of misunderstood social misfits, who plot to overthrow their jock bullies and inevitably get the girls.
Unfortunately the 1984 original is a rather awkward sit today, if only because the film so blatantly derails its own attempted portrayal of the nerds as nice, sweet guys deserving of respect and affection.
The problematic scene in question sees nerd protagonist Lewis Skolnick (Robert Carradine) wearing jock Stan Gable's (Ted McGinley) party costume and pretending to be him while having sex with Stan's girlfriend Betty (Julie Montgomery).
This most certainly qualifies as rape-by-deception, given that Betty thought she was having sex with Stan, though the movie attempts to hand-waive this issue by showing that Betty enjoyed her romp with Lewis.
Even so, having these goofball "charmers" tricking women into sex isn't a good look, and viewed today, it completely transforms the depiction of the nerds from endearing to feloniously creepy.
