13 Movies That Depressingly Predicted The Future

12. 9/11 - The Siege

It's no coincidence that this 1998 Denzel Washington-starring thriller was reportedly the most-rented movie following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The film revolves around a series of attacks that take place in New York City, apparently perpetrated by a Middle-Eastern terrorist cell. Major General William Devereaux (Bruce Wills) responds to locking down New York and rounding up every young Arab male he can find until the situation can be resolved.

Some four years after the movie's release, 9/11 had happened and the U.S. government subsequently opened the Guantanmo Bay detention facility, where suspects were racially profiled and held without due process or any sort of transparent legal status.

While the movie is an undeniable critique of such an overzealous reaction, it's easy to believe that those renting the movie in the wake of 9/11 likely took a more sympathetic approach to Devereau's actions.
