13 Movies That Destroyed Solo: A Star Wars Story At The Box Office
13. The Mummy (2017)
Box Office: $409.2 million
Perhaps nothing is more depressing an indication of the audience indifference towards Solo than the fact that it was narrowly beaten at the box office by last year's soulless Tom Cruise-starring The Mummy reboot.
Though stories of The Mummy's tough production didn't emerge until the movie had already been released, the marketing suggested nothing more than a generic retooling of a classic franchise nobody asked for.
There's one clear reason why the film outperformed Solo, though, and that's China. The Mummy grossed $91.7 million in the region alone (that's 22.4% of its entire box office), while Star Wars movies historically perform badly in China, and Solo has made just $16.4 million there so far (only 4.2% of its worldwide gross).
There evidently wasn't huge demand for either movie, but staggeringly, international audiences responded more to the easily digestible nonsense of a Tom Cruise tentpole than a Star Wars prequel. Ouch.
