13 Movies You Really Wanted To Hate (But Actually Couldn’t)
7. Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl
While the Pirates Of The Caribbean has blossomed into a huge, billion dollar movie series, there was a time it was just that silly blockbuster based on a theme park ride. The film’s announcement resulted in record levels of eye rolling in the press, even with a cast that included Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and Keira Knightley.
Why You Wanted To Hate It: While the trailers made it look pretty, Johnny Depp’s bizarre performance looked awful, and the presence of human tree Orlando Bloom as the hero didn’t get pulses quickening. The whole venture looked like an expensive tie-in for the ride, and failure was predicted.
The Reasons You Couldn’t: While the series devolved into a tedious mess centred around Depp’s quirky acting, the original is a genuinely fun adventure. It brought the pirate movie back to life, the cast – Bloom aside – was great and despite the hefty runtime it was never once boring.
Too bad the same can't be said for the sequels.
