2. Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built

The Winchester Mystery House would be a fascinating biopic, let alone the basis for one of 2018 scariest-looking horror movies. The tale of a widowed Sarah Winchester – of the rifle-making dynasty – going a bit off kilter and spending every waking hour of her life overseeing the construction of what now remains one of Cali’s more curious tourist attractions has it all: tragedy, intrigue, death and, if the rumours are true, ghosts by the barrel load.

Directing duo the Spierig Brothers, who did a decent job of bringing the Saw franchise back onto screens, have narrowed their focus on the ghostly element of the Winchester legend, creating what looks to be a twisty ghost story. The films sees Helen Mirren in the central role, as she goes about creating what will be a skewed structural legacy, with Jason Clarke tasked as the man to investigate just what the hellfire is going on.

The trailer is effective to the point you wouldn’t want to watch it after dark, with a notable mirror jump scare that is bound to cause a few yelps when up on the big screen. Movies are always at their creepiest when blended with the truth, and with Winchester we have the makings of a film that should stay with us long after the credits roll.
