Release Date: March 6th The Plot: When an American family moves to Southeast Asia, they end up caught in the middle of a dangerous coup, and attempt to escape as the militia starts killing off foreigners. Owen Wilson and Lake Bell star as the parents of the family, while Pierce Brosnan plays the heroic government agent trying to bring the situation under control in a movie being described as "Taken-esque". Why It's Awful: Here's a movie with a confusing mixture of elements that just seem like they don't go together. On the face of it, with Owen Wilson starring, The Coup sounds like a silly action comedy in the vein of something like Tropic Thunder, right? Wrong. For one, it's directed by John Erick Dowdle (Devil, As Above So Below), whose filmography typically consists of super-serious horror and thriller flicks, while the film has been given an R-rating for "strong violence including a sexual assault, and for language". Well, The Coup sure isn't a comedy, then. Even so, the casting of Wilson in a central role is very bizarre, especially considering his last foray into serious action, 2001's Behind Enemy Lines, was a total bust (though it wasn't really his fault). It's going to be immensely challenging to take this one seriously with the funnyman at front and center.
