13 Worst Movie Performances Of 2018

8. Jared Leto (The Outsider)

The Outsider Jared Leto
Netflix

Jared Leto plays an American WWII prisoner of war who ends up working his way up the Yakuza ladder in 1950s Japan, and while the Oscar-winner was clearly aiming for a stoic, contemplative performance - think Ryan Gosling in Drive - he ultimately delivered a lifeless misfire.

It doesn't help at all that this Netflix thriller is intensely boring to boot, but Leto brings almost nothing to the table here, looking more tired and bored than quietly intense.

Even ignoring all the "whitewashing" accusations which basically tanked the movie before it even came out, it's tough to imagine what attracted him to a role like this.

For all of Suicide Squad's faults, you can appreciate why he wanted to tackle The Joker, but this mirthless slog of an historical thriller with a hollow cipher for a protagonist? Baffling.

On the plus side, Leto will almost certainly avoid getting a Razzie nomination this time - after landing a Worst Supporting Actor nod for Suicide Squad - if only because so few people are even aware of The Outsider's existence.
