14 Awesome Performances In Otherwise Awful 2015 Movies
2. Toni Collette - Miss You Already
The Movie: Nobody wants to hate on the cancer movie, but you can only watch so many of them before the veneer of emotional manipulation becomes almost completely transparent and the artifice becomes painfully visible. Further compounding its lazy writing is the fact that there's not a single truly likable character among the cast, the direction is strangely hyperactive for a sober cancer drama, and it's about 20 minutes longer than it needs to be. You might cry, but those tears won't be truly earned. The Performance: Toni Collette plays the unfortunate cancer patient in the film...and she's bloody magnificent at it. Even though you might have misgivings with the oft-douchiness of her character, she completely nails how isolating the illness can make a person, and how it can erode their identity and their self-esteem. She's almost brilliant enough to tip the scales in the movie's favour, but when you look at everything around her, it's still wholly undeserving of a performance that, in a better film, may have been awards worthy.
