American Hustle was a fine effort from David O. Russell, but was it really Oscar worthy? Despite racking up 10 nominations, the movie didn't win a single award, even with current Hollywood darling Jennifer Lawrence strongly tipped to steal the Best Supporting Actress award away from Lupita Nyong'o, and O. Russell possibly depriving Spike Jonze of an Original Screenplay win. Though Captain Phillips, Nebraska and The Wolf of Wall Street also all failed to win a single award, they didn't have quite so much momentum going in as Hustle, which had 10 nominations and was also believed by most to be the "second runner up" to the Best Picture prize going by its performance on the circuit so far. For the film to win nothing as a result is pretty shocking, though given that the movie is far from the best work of anyone involved, it's encouraging to see the Academy didn't tirelessly fall over themselves to give it awards.
