Always the brief bout of seriousness in what is usually otherwise a relatively light-hearted show, the In Memoriam segment is an Oscar staple that honours the fallen actors of the last year, and is picked apart every year without fail by fans of deceased actors or crew members who somehow were snubbed from the credit crawl. This year's segment was particularly heart-rending to watch because it included three talented actors taken from us far too soon, in James Gandolfini, Paul Walker and Philip Seymour Hoffman, with the screen freezing briefly on Hoffman before Bette Midler appeared on stage to perform a moving rendition of Wind Beneath My Wings. Many complained that the likes of Cory Monteith and Tom Clancy were snubbed by the Academy, though a banner at the end of the segment did link fans to an extended In Memoriam on the Oscar website, which also referenced Sarah Jones, the camera operator who was killed on the set of movie Midnight Rider in late February.
