Ever since Disney assimilated 21st Century Fox, those with a penchant for superheroes immediately begun to ponder the possibility of the Fantastic Four turning up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Of course, Marvel's First Family has already been brought to live-action life on three occasions - Roger Corman's 1994 film, Tim Story's pair of 2000s movies, and more recently in Josh Trank's disappointing 2015 offering - but there's a real sense that the FF could truly be done justice if developed delicately within the confines of the MCU.

The 2019 edition of San Diego Comic-Con saw Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige confirm that, yes, plans are indeed afoot to bring Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm into the MCU - and now the film has taken a giant step forward by landing a director.

As revealed yesterday as part of The Walt Disney Company's Investor Day presentation, Jon Watts has been tasked with helming this new iteration of the Fantastic Four. Considering that Watts has directed both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, it's hugely positive news to hear that the FF will be in such capable hands.

At this early juncture, a loose release date has not been announced for this Fantastic Four picture, but realistically we'd be looking at a 2023 release at the absolute earliest.
