Okay, so after the success of The Shallows a few years ago, we can see why former Gossip Girl star Blake Lively would want to take the Brie Larson/ Scarlett Johansson route and reinvent herself as an action heroine.

But this self-serious, dreary flick wasn’t the way to do so, with its predictable revenge plot combining Bourne levels of taciturn grit and humourless frowning with flat and uninspired action sequences for an end result which was unfortunately more likely to inspire unintentional laughter than any thrills.

Hey, at least this one was less tastelessly exploitative than the similar, harder edged Jennifer Lawrence vehicle Red Sparrow—that’s got to count for something, given how little this forgettable action thriller succeeds at.
