Daniel Radcliffe’s post-Harry Potter career is, as Bart Simpson once said of Libya, a land of contrasts.
For every edgy indie effort which deservedly earns all sort of
critical acclaim (hello, Horns, Swiss Army Man, and The Woman in Black), there’s
a misfire like this one. And we can see where Radcliffe was coming from—combining
a hyper-kinetic, comically violent premise worthy of Neveldine/ Taylor with a
supporting turn from The Babysitter star/ action woman of the moment Samara Weaving,
it’s understandable that the actor assumed this edgy, propulsive comedy thriller
would be a satirical blast.
Unfortunately the flick missed the mark, mixing ugly visuals with an unfunny, try-hard script for a flick which was ultimately more embarrassing than awe-inspiring.
