6. The Grudge

The Grudge
Sony Pictures Releasing

Possibly the quickest original-to-remake cycle in horror history, with only fifteen years between the 2004 original (which was itself a sanitized Hollywood version of the actual Japanese original) and this reboot, this January horror had, well, January horror written all over it.

Sent out to cineplexes when nothing of note was on release to compete, this scare-free dud wasted the until-now promising director Nicolas Pesce (remember what a nightmare 2016’s The Eyes of My Mother was?) on an uninspired re-tread of the original, with an unwelcome revival of the jittery epileptic cutting style popular in the mid 2000’s and gory but un-scary jump moments to boot.

Stick with last year’s far superior horror-mystery-black-comedy hybrid, the Ryu Murakami adaptation Piercing, also from Pesce.
