1. Alicia Vikander
All of the previous 14 actors have a shot at being the breakout star of 2015 through one or two choice roles in the coming 12 months. Vikander, however, has seven. The Swedish actress impressed many with her strong performance as a bright young English princess in Denmark in historical romance/democratic reformist drama A Royal Affair and the glut of hot new movie projects she is now featuring in three years later are the result of that. This month alone Vikander can be seen as both First World War nurse and writer Vera Brittain discovering her pacifism in Testament Of Youth and pioneering artificial intelligence Ava discovering her humanity in Alex Garland's Ex Machina (as well as a supporting role in crime flick Son Of A Gun). Through the rest of the year the former ballet dancer will feature in everything from period drama (Tulip Fever) to epic fantasy (Seventh Son) and contemporary comedy drama (Adam Jones) to action blockbuster (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.). By next year's awards season Vikander could have two more contenders after working with Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance on post-First World War drama The Light Between Oceans and The King's Speech helmer Tom Hooper on true life transgender artist biopic The Danish Girl. With all this to come, the biggest surprise would be if Alicia Vikander is not a much bigger star by this time next year.
