The Role: Before Patricia Arquette was eventually cast in the role of protagonist Alabama Whitman, everyone had their own ideas about who the perfect fit was. Tarantino wrote the character with Joan Cusack in mind, while director Tony Scott was reportedly obsessed with scoring Drew Barrymore for the part. In a recent interview, Arquette said, "Tony really wanted Drew Barrymore as Alabama. He was obsessed with her. He had pictures of her wearing little outfits." What Happened?: Barrymore was unavailable, and so Arquette nabbed the part. Would It Have Worked?: Definitely. Barrymore has proven in numerous romantic comedies that she's cute and likeable, and seeing her perform in something this brutal and opposed to her usual fare would have been a real treat. At the end of the day, though, Arquette is more believable as white trash, and she was perfectly cast for the part.
