5. The Sandman
What We Know: Plans to adapt Neil Gaiman's iconic comic book series have been floating around for about two decades, though admittedly things have moved in the right direction over the last two years, with David S. Goyer producing along with Gaiman and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Gordon-Levitt has since bailed from the project as producer, star and director, while Eric Heisserer (Arrival) is apparently writing it.
Why It Won't Happen: Nobody seems to be able to catch a break with this one despite it having enormous promise, and Gordon-Levitt's departure over "creative differences" might suggest executive meddling to some. It'll be a box office gamble regardless of what happens, so don't be shocked if it just fades into the cinematic ether.
