15 Australian Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die
3. The Loved Ones
Torture porn and pitch black comedy come together in Sean Byrne’s directorial debut, indie horror The Loved Ones. Boasting a female villain crazier than Carrie White and her whack job mother combined, it tells the twisted tale of Lola – a rather unhinged young lass who doesn’t take the object of her affection Brent’s rejection of her invitation to a high school dance very well.
So, like any normal teen does, she kidnaps Brent and holds him captive at her home with the help of her equally demented dad all the while acting out her idea of the perfect prom. But she’s crazy, remember, so this is less vodka spiked punch more torture inflicted via power tools. As they say, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
Expect a distinctly Australian sense of humour, stomach-churning gore and a homage to Byrne’s favourite horror flicks – Carrie and The Evil Dead included.
