15 Awesome Films Since 2000 You'll Never Watch Again

5. The Mist

Michael Fassbender Shame
Dimension Films

Plot:

A deadly mist settles over a town and traps many people in a supermarket. They now face both the horrifying creatures in the mist and the increasingly mad people inside the supermarket.

Why It's Awesome:

Another great work from Frank 'Shawshank' Darabont, this is a highly impressive mixture of chilling monster movie and political commentary.

Why You'll Only Watch It Once:

The film is downcast and disturbing throughout due to the depiction of human savagery, but it's no worse than many other horror films. The reason you'll never see it again is that it has the most depressing, soul-crushing ending of them all.

Thomas' Jane's protagonist David Drayton drives away from the supermarket with his son and three other people. They drive through the mist and find no help, so they decide to kill themselves. With only four bullets, David shoots the other four - including his son - and goes outside so that the monsters can kill him... only for the military to show up 30 seconds later.

This is an unbelievably sad and harrowing ending made even more haunting by the soundtrack of The Host of Seraphim by Dead Can Dance, which is surely one of the saddest bits of music ever written. When you know this ending's coming, it's hard to emotionally invest yourself in another viewing and no matter how many times you think about a re-watch, all you'll ever be able to think of is David's final agonized scream.
