15 Awesome Horror Movies With Lower Critical Scores Than They Deserve

6. The Devils

Saw Fresh
Warner Bros.

Rotten Tomatoes: 67% (Average Score: 7.32/10)

Metacritic: 49

Controversial as it is, Ken Russell's' historical horror film about religious corruption is still a fearsome and extraordinary work that has lost little of its horrifying power all these years later. It's not perfect, but it's a very fine film and the ratings on both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic are surprisingly low considering the overall quality of the piece.

Many reviews seem to criticise The Devils for its content and explicit nature instead of focusing as much on the film as a whole and this feels incredibly reductive. The Devils is supposed to be disturbing and to attack a film for accomplishing its aims really doesn't make much sense at all. It's a nasty and uncomfortable viewing, but that was precisely the point.
