15 Awesome Movies To Watch This Summer (That Aren't Blockbusters)

9. Midsommar

Midsommar Florence Pugh
A24

Release Date: August 9

The Plot: A couple (Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor) visit a rural Swedish community on vacation, and as they take part in the mid-summer activities there, they soon come to realise it hides a violent cult.

Why It's Going To Be Awesome: Midsommar is the second film from writer-director Ari Aster, who did such a wonderful job with last summer's masterful horror film Hereditary.

The first trailer for his follow-up looks absolutely fantastic, and seems to be a rare horror film which wilfully bathes itself in bright natural light rather than drown everything in darkness.

The terrifically talented Florence Pugh feels like a natural fit for the lead role here, and between Aster's previous film and the obvious similarities to The Wicker Man, this will surely be one of the summer's most entertainingly effed-up movies.
