9. A Ghost Story

The Plot: After he's killed in a car accident, a man (Casey Affleck) returns to Earth as a white-sheeted ghost, while desperately attempting to make contact with his grieving wife (Rooney Mara).

Why It's Awesome: There has been absolutely nothing like this movie released this summer or really any other summer, a gorgeous, terrifically inventive and subtly devastating examination of life, death, love and loss.

Casey Affleck gives surely the best performance any A-list actor ever has while spending the majority of their screen time under a bed sheet, while Mara powerfully conveys the emotional anguish of losing a loved one.

Taking several unexpected turns in its latter half and examining its subject matter in a highly unique way, this is an absolute masterwork from director David Lowery (Ain't Them Bodies Saints).
