12. BERSERK: The Golden Age Arc III - The Advent

Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End Of Evangelion
Madman Entertainment

The late, great Kentaro Miura's Berserk is, without a doubt, one of the biggest properties in manga. So the fact that the adaptations are notoriously unfinished/terrible is heartbreaking. With that being said, Berserk's sordid past with adaptation doesn't mean there haven't been some great ones, and this movie is a solid example of when it has been done right.

In this film, Guts returns to the Band of the Hawk a year after leaving, only to find that their leader Griffith has been imprisoned. He, Casca and the remaining members of the military unit fight to free their former leader, but all-encompassing darkness awaits them.

One of the biggest criticisms thrown at this trilogy is the use of CGI instead of traditional 2D animation. This choice indeed led to awkward visuals in places. But, it had mostly ironed out the kinks by the time this third flick arrived, delivering an anime movie with a distinct visual flair.

Of course, anyone familiar with Berserk will know that this story arc is an unbridled horror show, and this movie captures that wholeheartedly. The sheer nightmarish tragedy of the narrative is enough to give you feelings of dread, fear and morbid fascination all in one - everything Berserk stands for.
