Fellow down under director Sean Byrne has better watch his back because if Ben Young’s feature film debut Hounds of Love is anything to go by, he’s got some competition in the Aussie horror genre.

Set in suburban Perth during the early 80s and inspired by a number of real-life crimes from that era, the film stars Ashleigh Cummings as teenager Vicki Maloney who is lured in by the promise of a ride home after attending a forbidden party and abducted by serial killer couple John and Evelyn White (Stephen Curry and Emma Booth).

A psychological game of cat and mouse unfolds between the three as Vicki realises their murderous intentions and must summon all her wits to drive a wedge between her captors and avoid the fate of their previous victims.

Tense and harrowing without an over-reliance on violence – most of which takes place offscreen and is somehow more terrifying for it – Hounds of Love is a noteworthy debut for Young and a solid psychological horror.
