1. I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore
Depressed nursing assistant Ruth (Melanie Lynskey) is having the mother of all bad days. After one of her patients croaks it and a random dude (director Macon Blair in a cameo) spoils the book she’s reading, she arrives home to find her home burgled and her laptop, anti-depressants and late grandmother’s silverware missing.
Sick of the world taking a dump on her parade, Ruth decides to go vigilante after the police are no help and with the help of her nunchaku-wielding, heavy metal-loving neighbour Tony (Elijah Wood with a rattail) tracks down those responsible which leads the unlikely duo down a rabbit hole involving criminal gangs, broken fingers, a bored housewife and a bloody (and vomit-y) shootout.
Darkly funny, subversive and surprisingly violent the film makes for an impressive debut from actor, screenwriter and now director Macon Blair. And though being tucked away on Netflix meant it didn’t quite get the attention it deserved, it was recognised with the US Dramatic Grand Jury Prize after its Sundance premiere and a Best Actress nod for Lynskey at the Gotham Independent Film Awards.
