15 Best Hidden Gem Movies Of 2018
7. Revenge
Rape-revenge movies are pretty rare in horror these days but with Revenge, director Coralie Fargeat has tried to re-embrace - or at the very least, restructure - the controversial sub-genre from a female perspective, putting less emphasis on the whole "rape" part of the title, and, you guessed it, doubling down on the "revenge" angle.
Whether it 100% succeeds in its aims is up for date, but what isn't is just how exhilarating Fargeat's tale of survival can be. Violence is quick and devastating, which is good because you'll be watching most of it through the cracks in your fingers anyway, while the oppressive heat of the isolating desert setting is palpable.
From a narrative perspective there's not too much new going on here, but the golden aesthetic, phoenix-rising-from-the-ashes symbolism and the final showdown, which has to have raised the bar for amount of fake blood used in one scene, offers the perfect subversion of the genre's worst habits that more than makes the occasional misstep worthwhile.
