Julia Ducournau's cinematic debut, Raw gained a huge amount of buzz when it premiered at festivals last year. Finally hitting cinemas in early 2017, the coming-of-age cannibal film about a vegetarian who becomes embroiled in the decadent world of her elite veterinary school was as rich with symbolism to unpack as it was full of stomach-churning gore.

Falling in with the wrong crowd at the snobby university, Garance Marillier's Justine attempts to navigate the social hierarchy of the school and her studies all the while battling her own bloodthirsty urges.

There are shades of Nicolas Winding Refn and Ana Lily Amirpour to be found in the flick, especially during the hypnotic party scenes, but ultimately Raw is its own unique beast that leaves viewers with plenty to chew on long after the credits roll.
