6. The Witch

Written and directed by Robert Eggers in his directorial debut, The Witch is a period supernatural horror flick based on the life and times of English settlers in the New England during the 1700s. Having been banished by their Puritan Christian settlement over differing views on religion, William and his family build their own farm out on the outskirts of a large forest.

The Witch takes a lot of influence from traditional and historical accounts of witchcraft, and is heavily focused on the issues that arise from having nothing but your religious beliefs to explain the unexplainable. The eerie stillness of their surroundings perfectly encapsulates the atmosphere around William and his family, forcing them to all band together and work hard for ultimately very little.

Eggers' commitment to the film is what really helps it stand out though. The cast do a brilliant job in selling the dialects and accents of the time, even taking the time to speak in the old form of English and replicating the agricultural methods of early settler in the New World. The Witch has a Metacritic score of 83/100 and a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 91%, having also won their Horror Film of the Year award following its release in 2015.
