3. The Invitation
Tense, unnerving and filled with suspense, The Invitation is an absolute shining light for how to do a thriller perfectly.
The film follows Will and his girlfriend Kira after they accept an invitation for a night of wining from Will's ex-girlfriend, Eden. Eden and her new fella David have just come back from a trip to Mexico, and invite Pruitt and Sadie, two people they met there, as well as their old friends to the dinner party. Almost as soon as they step foot through the door, there's a real sense of tension hanging over the two hosts and only begins to be ramped up as they talk more and more about what they discovered during their trip.
On top of that, the film touches on the themes of loss, acceptance and moving on beautifully as Will remembers more and more about his life with Eden, and the contrasting personalities and differing coping mechanisms add a whole new layer to a movie that really rewards a patient audience, but doesn't hold back on a brilliantly brutal finale.
The Invitation currently holds a 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Metacritic rewarding it with an aggregate score of 74/100.
