For all its shocking moments (necrophilia and cannibalism included), much of the real violence in Nicolas Winding Refn’s psychological, fashion industry set horror The Neon Demon happens largely off screen. After the film reaches its cannibalistic climax in which young, beautiful model Jesse (Elle Fanning) is quite literally devoured by her frenemies – models Gigi (Bella Heathcote) and Sarah (Abbey Lee) and necrophilia-prone makeup artist Ruby (Jena Malone) – we’re treated to a final scene just as weird, stylish and sinister as the rest of the film is.

Bellies full of model flesh, Gigi and Sarah are at a photoshoot when Gigi suddenly takes ill and after some prolonged dry heaving vomits up one of Jesse’s cannibalised eyeballs before stabbing herself to death with a pair of scissors in a seppuku-inspired fashion. Just to throw in a little more macabre before the movie ends, Sarah then eats the regurgitated eyeball. Thanks for that, Winding Refn.
