One of the heavier entries on this list alongside All Day and a Night, unfortunately the tragic narrative of Lost Girls is based on a true story.
Filmed by a former documentarian, the film follows an unrecognisable Amy Ryan of The US Office fame as the harried mother of a missing sex worker. As the film progresses, she attempts to track down and get justice for her daughter when she realizes the police refuse to follow up on women who go missing in her daughter's profession.
Often harrowing, this downbeat but bracing drama makes for a sobering socially conscious watch on a par with 2018's difficult, superb Wind River.
