After years of waiting, begging, and pleading, Arrested Development fans finally got the fourth season of the series that they had been hoping for, though reactions to its new format and binge-centric storytelling structure were a bit mixed. The fourth season came and went with a bit of a whimper, and all talk of a fifth season, and possible film, went quiet. Speaking with USA Today, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said that a fifth season was not a matter of if, but "when." As in, whenever they can managed to wrangle the show's expansive and incredibly busy cast back together to film some more episodes. Getting the gang back together was not an easy task for season 4, which led to many of the problems that fans had with the new season. Despite trying their best to work around scheduling limitations, the creators of the show just didn't manage to fully recapture the magic that we'd all once felt while in the company of the Bluths. Even Sarandos acknowledges that it's "a fair criticism," and admitted that "the cast didnt' appear on screen often enough together" in season 4. Wrangling everyone together for a monthlong movie shoot may be a bit easier to accomplish, which has led showrunner Mitch Hurwitz to suggest that we may get an Arrested Development movie before a fifth season. In any case, it looks like both are on the horizon, we've just got to wait it out a bit longer.
