The Scene: Presumably as a reference to his fascinating Antarctic documentary Encounters at the End of the World, Werner Herzog makes a brief voiceover cameo in Penguins of Madagascar as a documentarian who comes across Skipper (Tom McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller), and Rico (Conrad Vernon) as babies. He notes the grim potential of their fate before telling his boom operator Gunther to "give them a shove" off the icy cliff. Why It's So WTF: Granted, this would fly over the heads of any kid watching and good number of parents too, but if you're fan of any of Herzog's documentary films, it's likely you recognised his distinctive voice in this part, all the more so given the role he's playing. Though Herzog has taken bizarre roles in Hollywood movies before (such as The Zec in Jack Reacher), he's never sent himself up quite so obviously, and to do so in a movie predominantly aimed at children just makes it all the more strange.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
