15 Cinema Legends You Won't Believe Have Never Won Oscars

6. Ridley Scott

Ridley Scott has a filmography that includes the likes of Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Prometheus and Gladiator; despite the latter being an Oscar winner for Best Picture though, the legendary director has only ever been nominated three times. In 1991, Scott, nominated for Thelma & Louise, lost out to Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs); he'd then lose two years running in 2000 and 2001, as his work on Gladiator and Black Hawk Down was snubbed in favour of Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) and Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind). Despite being sci-fi classics, Alien was only nominated for Best Visual Effects €“ which it won €“ and Blade Runner only picked up two nominations (Best Visual Effects and Best Art Direction); Prometheus was also nominated in the Best Visual Effects category in 2013. Ridley Scott has also never won Best Director at the BAFTAs or the Golden Globes, despite receiving two nominations from each. He may not have triumphed at awards ceremonies, but he's grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide, and was knighted in 2003.
