Recruited by the US government at the end of WWII, Dr Merkwurdigliebe changed his name to Strangelove and took up a position as President Merkin Muffley’s Scientific Advisor. He occasionally forgets his surroundings, though, and refers to the President as “Mein Fuhrer” or gives a Nazi salute.

For Strangelove, nuclear holocaust isn’t the end – it’s an opportunity. Because the future of the human race is at stake, Strangelove has a rapt audience when he announces his plan to retreat underground, where the continuance of the species will be guaranteed by the provision of ten women for each man.

“I hasten to add,” the doctor says, “that the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics, which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.”
