It's incredibly rare for a Sundance success to ride the wave all the way to Oscar nominations, and virtually unheard of for such a film to actually win major honours.

That said, the buzz behind Call Me By Your Name is loud and unprecedented enough to cast cynicism aside here, with comparisons to both Brokeback Mountain and Richard Linklater's observational dramas placing it in firm stead for at least a Best Picture nomination.

Though winning the award outright is obviously a long shot for just about anything at this stage, Luca Guadagnino's film has put itself out there early with a strong case. If it can sustain momentum throughout awards season, this could be a major threat to watch.
