15 Films You Didn't Realise Were Based On Comic Books

1. Annie

A History of Violence
Columbia

The 1978 Broadway musical of Annie was such a hit, it was adapted into a film by legendary director, John Huston, four years later, and became one of the year's most successful films. (I mean... it didn't make a profit because it was so expensive to produce, but still.)

However, the origins of the ginger-curled orphan go a lot further back than the 1970s musical. The character first appeared in the 1924 comic strip, Little Orphan Annie, meaning her comic predates Superman by over a decade.

Excluding the song numbers, the original story is pretty much the same. Annie is raised by a barbaric carer (who was originally Miss Asthma,) in an orphanage before being rescued by rich aristocrat, Daddy Warbucks. Annie's stepfather was only meant to have a small role but he was so popular with readers, Warbucks became a main character.

Sadly, the comic was cancelled in 2010, but Annie does still appear as a supporting character in Dick Tracy strips.
