Initially getting her career started in a series of bad-to-atrocious horror flicks like the clunky 2010 Nightmare of Elm Street remake, Rooney Mara received wide acclaim for her supporting turn in David Fincher's searing drama, The Social Network.

The following year, she teamed up with Fincher again for the incredibly dark Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which saw Mara slip effortlessly into the most complex and challenging role of her career as vigilante Lisbeth Salander.

An actress with the ability to shift between terrifyingly intense and tragically sensitive, Mara followed up on her major break-out with roles in the thriller Side Effects, the biopic Lion, the beautiful romantic drama Carol - which earned her a second Oscar nod - and the massively under-appreciated Mary Magdalene.

Constantly challenging herself and willing to push the boundaries of what she can achieve, you can be sure she'll scope an Oscar or two later in her career, if the Academy has any sense.
