The craziest thing about Andy Serkis is that he's never even been nominated for an Oscar during his career, which is ridiculous when you consider how much he's done for cinema - and how well he's done it.

Fondly remembered for his remarkable performances as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the great ape Caesar in the Planet of the Apes franchise, Serkis is best known for his work using motion capture technology to play completely computer-generated characters in madly popular movie franchises.

Ushering in a whole new acting technique to cinema, Serkis - and the supremely talented animators in his corner - has created some of the most enduring characters in recent memory, but he's been snubbed by the Academy at every turn.

Outside of his motion capture work, Serkis has also shone in brilliant live-action roles, such as in Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll and Black Panther.

Due to the complexities of his motion capture work, it's likely he'll be stuck in Oscar jail for a long time to come, but even then Serkis going so long without so much as a nomination remains one of the Academy's biggest mistakes.
