15 Great Directors Under The Age Of 45

11. Sofia Coppola (41)

Sofia CoppolaFilmography €“ The Virgin Suicides (1999), Lost In Translation (2003), Marie Antoinette (2006), Somewhere (2010), The Bling Ring (2013). A successful woman in what is a male-dominated field, Sofia Coppola began her career in front of the camera, giving an excruciating performance in The Godfather Part III before switching her attention to behind the camera instead where, like her father Francis Ford Coppola before her, she has excelled. Her debut, released when she was twenty-eight, was the Virgin Suicides, a highly dark piece. It was followed by Lost In Translation, a film that provided Bill Murray with one of the best roles of his long career and helped propel Scarlett Johansson to stardom. A biopic of Marie Antoinette was next, but polarised critics who were divided on its modern approach to historical figures. A four year gap would then occur before the release of Coppola€™s next film, Somewhere, which has helped to make Hollywood take notice of Elle Fanning, though it also featured the bizarre casting of Jackass star Chris Pontius in a supporting role. Her latest film, out in June, is the Bling Ring, a film about a group of Los Angeles teenagers who ascertain the locations of celebrities on the Internet and use the information to burgle their homes. Based on true events, the film has an ensemble cast that includes Harry Potter alumnus Emma Watson.
